Truly remarkable advances have been made in virology over the past 40 years. The tools of modern molecular biology have clarified many of the fundamental features of viruses, particularly the biochemistry, mechanisms of pathogenesis, replication, and biologic and medical properties. The first edition, published 5 years ago, sought to combine the basic and medical aspects of virology in a comprehensive format not available in standard textbooks of microbiology. The editors wisely chose to format the text into two sections: one addressing general concepts of basic and medical virology and the other addressing replication and biologic and medical properties of viruses.
