To the Editors: In requesting that married women residents plan ahead and have children after residency training, Odell and colleagues (1) showed their lack of concern for the future careers of these women. They also showed their lack of understanding of both the reality of job-hunting after a sojourn from medicine and the enormous financial indebtedness faced by most residents at that time.
For women opting for further training, requesting at the fellowship interview a year off for parenting may not be considered "acceptable," except perhaps by the most understanding of directors. Sharing personal and intimate wishes on reproductive choices
