When the first edition of Clinical Hypertension appeared in 1973, there were only a few published texts on the subject; now there are dozens. Although there are currently books on hypertension that are more comprehensive, the author has resisted the temptation to expand the monograph into an encyclopedia. The latest revision is actually shorter than the fourth edition. Other than one chapter on pediatric hypertension by Dr. Ellin Lieberman, Dr. Kaplan has written the entire book. Throughout the many editions of Clinical Hypertension, the author has hewed to the goals of giving the "most attention to the most common problems";
