Serious concern has been expressed about developing an adequate number of qualified physician-scholars to fill leadership roles in the health care system to ensure the continuing development of medicine and the optimal uses of new medical knowledge (1, 2, 4, 5). This issue was considered at a recent symposium that brought together leading figures from the major segments of the health care system who have a significant stake in the number and type of students entering scholarly and leadership careers in medicine (4).
