"MD pilot missing in action in Gulf war" (1).
I cannot get that headline, and the story it heralded, out of my mind. An Air Force major who was both an active pilot and a flight surgeon was at the controls of an F-15E that did not return from a bombing run during the first hours of the Gulf war. He has since been confirmed dead. My first reactions to the story were admiration for the physician-pilot's heroism and sadness over his loss. But I have since wondered how a doctor wound up in the cockpit of an attack aircraft
