The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) operates the largest single health care system in the United States— the Veterans Health Administration. In 1990, its 172 medical centers, 126 nursing homes, 32 domiciliary care units, and 46 independent or satellite clinics and outreach clinics provided directly for 983 000 hospital admissions and 22.6 million outpatient visits (1).
