Chronic headache is common. Although it does not directly threaten life or cause crippling deformity, it causes significant disability. Headache is second only to low back pain as a cause of time lost from work; it leads to excessive use of analgesic medications; and the disability it causes often disrupts family life. Yet, as common as headache is, it usually receives short shrift in textbooks of medicine, and few physicians are taught much about it during their training. Fortunately, several fine monographs about headache are available. Finally, a text devoted entirely to its treatment is available.
