When I see the men with wigs,
pallid faces, slender hands and noses
gaze with only intellect upon the dead,
their learning tool, their hands-on lab,
some look blankly into the chest
where others probe with long instruments
gaining best exposure for the back
row of the auditorium and retract
the meat of the mediastinum,
Puritans robed for turkey dinner,
one dead Indian ripe for stuffing,
When I see their keen indifference
I see my own face among them,
cutting nose and guilty eyes,
Please God lift my painted hand
to wipe the long dried blood from his side
