During the past three decades, the federal government has collected and published a staggering amount of statistical data on many aspects of health and disease in the American population. The data have been published in two series that have been known to librarians as the "Rainbow Series" because of the range of colors of their covers. These documents are well known to many health-policy planners, economists, and epidemiologists, but are not known by many thinkers and writers in medicine who could usefully draw on these documents for their analyses of health and medical needs in American life.
