Mathematic models describing the transmission of communicable diseases have been used to understand disease control for nearly 100 years, at least since Hamer and Ross invented the "mass action principle" (an infection's rate of spread is proportional to rate of contact between infected and susceptible individuals) early in this century to consider the behavior of measles and malaria.
