You may have noticed something missing from your Annals—the bag in which it is mailed. Starting with this issue, Annals will no longer come in a mailing bag or envelope; the address label will be put directly on the journal. This change will save approximately 1.6 million plastic bags per year. (Issues mailed with ACP Journal Club, and our international editions, will continue to be in bags.)
Because the bags do protect Annals, we first considered alternatives to eliminating them. Most of the so-called biodegradable plastics do not, in fact, degrade unless exposed to light, air, and water—conditions not guaranteed
