Nearly 25 years ago, the Handbook of Physiology appeared in its first edition (in five volumes) and rapidly became the authoritative reference in gastrointestinal physiology. I welcome this long overdue second edition (now in four volumes). This review deals with volume IV, Intestinal Absorption and Secretion, which is especially authoritative and even more useful as a reference than the first edition's volume III, Intestinal Absorption. The other outstanding multivolume reference, Physiology of the Gastrointestinal Tract (second edition), is now 5 years out of date.
