The grey tide arrives daily
announced by four wheels
squeaking on linoleum tiles.
The first wave with fevers,
septic work-ups, culture everything.
Plug in antibiotics, plug in
The second wave lost their feeding tubes.
Green-blue liquid on their gowns.
The paramedics come and go
but do not speak of Michelangelo.
The thick ferment of long-spent lives
ends like this:
another in the grey tide.
"Well, I need a vacation,"
he laughs, told his left hip is broken.
"Don't worry, I'm not going anywhere."
Graceful in his humor, a brave man.
