During the last 15 years, an explosion of knowledge has occurred within the field of nephrology. Several reasons can account for this: The kidney, because of the development of highly sensitive analytic methodology, can now be studied at the tubular and cellular level; immunologic mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis of renal disease were identified using the electron microscopic and immunofluorescent techniques on kidney tissue; and the kidney and its role as an endocrine organ was finally recognized and understood.
