Written policies addressing the ethical dimensions of medical practice are increasingly becoming a part of the bureaucratic landscape in American hospitals and health care institutions. Such policies range from straightforward descriptions of established practices to more controversial documents that authorize fundamental changes in institutional practice. One might question whether many of the written policies on bioethical matters are beneficial for clinicians or patients. Useful or not, they are a fact of life because they are increasingly mandated by accrediting agencies.
