This book is the report of the Committee on Drug Use in the Workplace, which was formed by the National Research Council and the Institute of Medicine at the request of the National Institute on Drug Abuse. In addition to drug use in the work place, the committee's comprehensive report covers the effects of drugs “away from the work site, hangover, and withdrawal effects.” Important words such as abuse and dependency are defined, and issues requiring further research are outlined.
The report is notable for its scientific, nonmoralistic attitude and general thoughtfulness throughout. For example, the author writes that
