Twenty-one “pioneers in the wide fields of the pulmonary circulation and gas exchange write on their careers.” They have worked in the field for at least 25 years and were asked by the editors to discuss “how they got started, who influenced them, and what troubles they had; in other words, to tell it like it was.” Chapters include “Strength and Failure of Pulmonary Capillaries” by John B. West; “My Studies of the Lung Microcirculation” by Grant de J. Lee; “Search for Diffusion Limitation in Pulmonary Gas Exchange” by Johannes Piiper; and “Pulmonary Edema: Then and Now” by Norman C. Smith. Peter Harris' description of his work with animals in Delhi and Agra is particularly engrossing. Portraits, diagrams, microscopic sections. End-of-chapter references, but no index.
