That Brenner's encyclopedic textbook has reached a fifth edition is ample proof of its authority and value to nephrologists and to general physicians with a strong interest in renal disease. The book is still notable for its scientifically rigorous treatment of renal biochemistry and physiology and for its up-to-date references. Many chapters have been rewritten, and new chapters cover basic science topics that could not be adequately dealt with in the preceding editions. Some clinicians will appreciate the new chapter on the gerontologic aspects of renal function and disease.
