Dr. Wall presents some new data and an intriguing hypothesis for the protection against alcoholism that some Asian persons experience. It will be interesting to examine larger samples of persons classified according to the amount of alcohol they drink for the presence of both ALDH and ADH variant alleles. In addition, I stand corrected: More intense experiences are not necessarily unpleasant, especially in light of the severe reactions to alcohol consumption experienced by persons with variant alleles at both ALDH and ADH.
