Drs. Oler and Szapary ask whether there is a similar or stronger association between body mass and risk for hypertension among African Americans. Because 98% of the Nurses' Health Study participants are white , insufficient numbers are available to perform a subset analysis among African-American women. We will be able to address this issue in future analyses of the Nurses' Health Study.
Drs. Oler and Szapary also ask about weight fluctuation and risk for hypertension. We first asked detailed questions about weight fluctuation in 1992 and will report findings in relation to hypertension elsewhere. However, the strong associations between body mass index or weight changes and risk for hypertension did not change materially after adjustment for weight fluctuations.
