TO THE EDITOR:
In a case–control study of patients with endocarditis (1), Strom and colleagues found no increase in dental procedures within 3 months before the onset of endocarditis compared with controls. They conclude that dental procedures are not a significant risk factor for infective endocarditis.
The case-patients were drawn from a community-based population subject to conventional antibiotic prophylaxis before dental work. Although the authors state that “few patients received antibiotic prophylaxis,” in fact 27 of 35 case-patients and controls with known cardiac valvular abnormalities did receive such prophylaxis before dental work.
