The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is thought to partially circulate in the blood bound to low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles (1). A study recently suggested that the extent of HCV-lipoprotein co-migration may correlate with the severity of liver disease (2). Whether a similar correlation exists in terms of response to antiviral therapy remains to be determined. We prospectively documented measures of lipid metabolism (cholesterol, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein, LDL, apolipoprotein A-I, and apolipoprotein B) in 7 chronic HCV carriers with liver enzyme levels that normalized and HCV RNA that cleared from the circulation for at least 6 months after 1 year of recombinant interferon-α therapy (responders) and 13 patients who did not have this response (nonresponders). The two groups were well matched with respect to age, sex, extent of liver enzyme abnormalities, and estimated duration of infection.
