Field of medicine: All.
Audience: All physicians, medical students, doctors' spouses, and patients.
Purpose: To remind us of our humanity.
Content: The book is a collection of short stories by Chekhov that have a physician as the central character, who may show courage and altruism or arrogance and incompetence. The foreword, by Robert Coles, and the introduction, by the book's editor, Jack Coulehan, provide both a brief, fascinating biography of the Russian physician, who lived 100 years ago, and a fine analysis of the writings of perhaps the greatest short-story writer of all time.
