TO THE EDITOR:
A compulsive handwasher myself, and a veteran of a teaching program in which my faculty and I insisted that every patient has the right to see physician, nurse, and student alike wash their hands before an examination, I read the article by Pittet and colleagues (1) and the accompanying editorial by Weinstein (2) with some detached bemusement. For years, nurses both compliant with and defiant of Pittet and colleagues' commonsense hygienic suggestions have told me that no other clinician in my multispecialty group regularly washes his or her hands before touching patients, that none ever wash pens or pencils, and that no one has ever been seen to clean his or her stethoscope parts, which are often in contact with ill patients' skin—all this despite a nontrivial body of published research supporting the necessity of such practices.
