TO THE EDITOR:
In his essay (1), Dr. Verghese elegantly addressed the issue of foreign (or international) medical graduates (FMGs) and the hardship and hurdles they face to pursue graduate medical education in the United States. There is another aspect of this subject. Foreign medical graduates account for 27% of the 96 937 residents and fellows and a quarter of the 853 187 physicians in the United States (2). About 40% of primary care programs in the United States are already dependent on FMGs, and two thirds of the total number of FMGs serve in hospitals that provide a disproportionate share of care for the poor in this country (3).
