Rae Varcoe of Auckland, New Zealand, is the winner of Annals of Internal Medicine's 2004 Poetry Prize. The poet actually took both first and second places for her poems “Signs” and “Ode to My Right Hand,” respectively. “Signs” was published in the 5 October 2004 issue of Annals(vol. 141, no. 7) and is reprinted here. Annals extends thanks to the contest judges, Daniel Bosch, John Stone, and Abigail Zugar. Daniel Bosch's latest book of poetry is Crucible, published by Handsel Books. John Stone's latest book of poetry is Music From Apartment 8: New and Selected Poems, published by Louisiana State University Press. Abigail Zugar is a frequent contributor to The New York Times.
