Field of medicine: Internal medicine and its subspecialties.
Format: Hardcover book.
Audience: Anyone who has experienced academic medicine or who seeks to understand the experience of a medicine resident.
Purpose: To chronicle the author's formative experiences and development in her medicine residency “beginning on the first morning of [her] residency and ending on its final night.”
Content: The 45 chapters are each short vignettes that, loosely connected, portray the gradual development of the author from a nervous, very green intern to a competent, professional, and compassionate “board-eligible” physician. Most of the chapters concentrate on patient encounters, the medical circumstances of the encounters, and the relationship between the author and her patients. However, interactions with housestaff, attendings, and friends are also described. The significant medical content is explained in layman's terms, and a glossary at the end of the book provides additional definitions of medical jargon.
