Uncle Rog lived a half-mile from us, along Wolf River. I would see him drive by most days, en route to the hospital, while I was shooting baskets on a hoop attached to our garage. He always gave me a friendly wave but never stopped, as he was usually in a hurry.
Small in stature, he played quarterback and tennis in high school and was a baseball catcher in his freshman year at the University of Wisconsin. He graduated from Rush Medical College in Chicago, did a medicine residency at what is now Northwestern Medical Center, and then joined his father in practice in Shawano, Wisconsin, a rural town of only 5000 people.
