The percentage of total opioid use (measured in oral MEQs) accounted for by patients in a given percentile of use for each year between 2001 and 2013 is shown. For example, in 2013, the top 1% of prescription opioid users (i.e., the 99th percentile) accounted for 23% of total MEQs, whereas the top 5% (95th percentile) accounted for 59% of total MEQs and the top 10% (90th percentile) accounted for 76% of total MEQs. MEQ = morphine equivalent.
