Until one surveys the field of essential subject matter that must be included in a treatise on diseases of the digestive system there can be but little realization of the task which confronts the author who attempts such a work. The reviewer might be inclined to be critically disposed when he finds in the present work but a page given over to typhoid fever and only a line to acute poisoning with lead, mercury and arsenic, did he not realize that the entire range of diseases of the alimentary tract, from xerostomia, through the avitaminous diseases to carcinoma of the
