The Relative Value of Diagnostic Tests for Hyperparathyroidism.

Measurements of serum calcium and phosphorus, urinary calcium, and urinary phosphorus excretion were made in 36 patients with proven hyperparathyroidism, 34 adenomas, one hyperplasia, and one carcinoma. The mean values of repeated determinations were compared, both to evaluate the relative value of standard diagnostic techniques and to test the value of phosphate clearance in those patients with normal or borderline levels of calcium or phosphorus.

Nearly half of the patients demonstrated levels of serum phosphorus in the normal or low normal range. Of these, phosphate clearance was clearly abnormal in ten and normal in seven, two of whom were azotemic.
