Several viruses or groups of viruses have been recovered in tissue culture from cases of common cold. These include the ECHO 28 (2060-JH) viruses of Pelon, Mogabgab, Phillips, and Pierce (1, 2) and of Price (3), the rhinoviruses of Tyrrell, Bynoe, and Taylor-Robinson (4, 5), the coryzaviruses of Hamparian, Ketler, and Hilleman (6), and miscellaneous similar viruses described by other workers (7-9). Present data (10) suggest that all these agents belong in a single ECHO 28-rhino-virus-coryzavirus (ERC) group. The agents may be divided into 2 subgroups based on propagability or non-propagability in monkey renal cell cultures (4, 5, 10).
