Although histoplasmosis is a common infection in many geographical areas, meningitis as a clinical manifestation of disease has been reported rarely and proved antemortem only in children (1-4).
The present study of 5 adults represents a beginning attempt to define the laboratory, clinical, and therapeutic aspects of histoplasma meningitis.
The diagnosis is based on the isolation in culture of Histoplasma capsulatum from the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of 4 patients, from the sputum of the fifth, and on the presence in all patients of a lymphocytic meningitis with elevated CSF pressure, cell count, and protein concentration.
