In recent years there has been renewed interest in the concept of the "patient as a person" both by the patient population emphasizing the breach of this concept in practice and by the medical profession stressing the need to develop and observe better doctor-patient relationships. This relationship, erroneously characterized as "the art of medicine" and "bedside manner," has largely been transmitted to the medical student by clinical preceptorship during his third and fourth years of medical school education.
