The treatment of fluid and electrolyte disorders is regarded by many physicians as a hopelessly complex problem; far more complex, for example, than the proper use of digitalis. Does this view arise from the need to add and multiply in designing such treatment, or is it due to the too-many variables ("parameters" in current jargon) that must be taken into account, albeit, variables no greater in number but more accessible to analysis than those present in many other medical problems?
