The Occurrence of Malignant Hypertension and Renal Insufficiency in Progressive Systemic Sclerosis (Diffuse Scleroderma).

During the past 10 years there has been increasing awareness of the frequency and ominous significance of arterial hypertension in patients with progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS). In our experience, the development of hypertension in these individuals has been associated with uniformly fatal renal insufficiency, which has accounted for approximately 50% of the over-all death rate in PSS.

The present report is concerned with clinical and pathological findings in a group of 21 patients with this disorder. There were 14 women and 7 men, the majority of whom had had scleroderma for 2 years or less prior to the appearance of
