Moses Maimonides, rabbi, physician, philosopher, and mathematician, was born in Cordova, Spain, on March 30, 1135 (Nissan 14, 4895, in the Jewish Calendar), to an illustrious ancestry tracing back to the Royal House of King David of Israel. Upon his father Maimon fell the task of raising the precocious Moses Ben Maimon, whose mother had died giving him birth. Under constant persecution of the Almohades, the Maimon family wandered throughout Spain, North Africa, and Palestine, finally setting in Fostat (old Cairo), Egypt, in 1165. During these early, difficult years Maimonides wrote a brilliant work on logic and completed a work
