The first of these two books provides, in 14 chapters by 14 experts, a detailed, authoritative, documented survey of historical and contemporary developments in traditional, scientific, and social aspects of medicine in mainland China. Surgery, drug therapy, infectious and parasitic diseases, acupuncture, and mental disorders get particular attention. The relation of the family to health care is discussed at length, with close attention to the Chinese traditions in family structure. Several chapters concentrate on public health measures and organization, and the contemporary approach to research is discussed through an account of the Academy of Medical Sciences and a chapter on
