The second edition of this well-known text written entirely by two distinguished chest physicians at the University of Edinburgh is a welcome addition to the clinical literature on respiratory disease. A rather compressed initial chapter of 65 pages introduces the functional anatomy and applied physiology of the normal respiratory system. (A diagram of the pressure-volume curve of the chest and lung with appropriate discussion would have been useful). A very brief chapter on epidemiology supports the importance of respiratory disorders in the overall health picture. The authors are particularly aware of epidemiologic considerations and give ample attention to this area
