Dr. Pellegrino's book poses an unusual problem for the reviewer who is left with a clear imperative of ordering the reader not just to study the book but to buy it for his or her personal library. "Order" is an impossibly authoritarian approach for the 20th century and I personally disown it, but not the impulse. Own it not because Humanism and the Physician is the essence of humanism (The Adventures of Don Quixote is that), nor because it is the best recent exposition of the relationship of philosophy and medicine (Enrico Contore's Scientific Humanism is that), nor that it
