The second edition of this well-regarded text has been published 7 years after the first. The organization, format, and many of the contributors are unchanged, but about 200 pages have been added. Surgical aspects of spinal disease are emphasized, as may be expected when the 30 principal authors include 15 orthopedic surgeons and 7 neurosurgeons. There also are contributions from an anatomist, internists, neurologists, a physiatrist, and a psychiatrist. Radiologic techniques are amply represented among the 773 numbered illustrations, many of which include comparative views. Most of the pictorial material, which also includes photographs and diagrams, is of good quality.
