Fields as diverse as sociology, anthropology, psychology, and psychoanalysis have contributed to our understanding of the complexity of medical encounters, but often these contributions cannot be translated into practical suggestions that acknowledge the realities of primary care. The Consultation is written by practicing British general practitioners who integrate several themes from these disciplines into a practical guide for defining objectives in a medical encounter, and for improving the physician's skills at joining with patients to achieve these objectives.
