Hypomagnesemic Hypocalcemia Independent of Parathyroid Hormone

Hypocalcemia, common in patients with magnesium depletion, has been attributed to either defective release of parathyroid hormone, resistance to the hormone's peripheral effects, or a combination of the two (1). We report a case that suggests that this hypocalcemia may simply represent a direct effect of magnesium depletion on bone independent of the effects of parathyroid hormone. A 68-year-old man presented with a thyroid mass. A biopsy specimen showed recurrence of a squamous cell carcinoma of a vocal cord that had been removed 4 years previously.
