It is appropriate to review these books in tandem because their contents are naturally interwoven. But it is even more proper because the authors are old colleagues who previously authored the first edition of Muscle Biopsy, in which the clinical and laboratory aspects were presented in an acceptable continuum.

The first edition of Brooke's book, published in 1977, was notable for its clarity, pithiness, and emphasis on the clinician's viewpoint. The book was not in the tradition of Cecil and Loeb's exhaustive treatment of internal medicine that Adams and Walton have followed in their books on neuromuscular diseases. Instead, Brooke's
