This Clinical Efficacy Assessment Project report summarizes the published evidence and expert opinion related to using carotid endarterectomy for patients with symptomatic and asymptomatic cerebrovascular disease. As an indication of the importance of this topic, and attesting to the paucity of quality data on which to base clinical policy, three clinical trials of endarterectomy and medical therapy have been initiated recently by the National Institutes of Health. One trial is examining the efficacy of endarterectomy in patients with symptomatic cerebrovascular disease (transient ischemia in the carotid artery distribution or minor stroke).
