Rheumatologic evaluations often depend on synovial fluid analysis. Once explained, the principles of synovial fluid analysis are relatively straightforward, but the explanation must be accurate, succinct, and easily assimilated. Gatter's first edition fulfilled these requirements admirably, but the second edition is better.
The new edition features co-authorship of H. Ralph Schumacher and new chapters titled "Physiology and Pathophysiology of Joints" and "Special Stains for Cellular and Crystalline Material." New authors of "Stains, Cultures, and Other Tests Of Infection" and "Chemistry, Serology, and Immunology" have rewritten these chapters, but all chapters, tables, and figures have been improved, with updated references. Especially
