A minority of patients experience progression to clinically significant left ventricular dysfunction and enlargement after myocardial infarction (1). However, patients with worsening left ventricular function after myocardial infarction are at significantly greater risk for congestive heart failure and death (23). Advances in the care of acute myocardial infarction over the past decade—particularly the use of mechanical and pharmacologic reperfusion therapies—have reduced the risk for left ventricular dysfunction (4) and improved morbidity and mortality after myocardial infarction (5).
