These recommendations include administering vaccine to persons with any condition that compromises handling of respiratory secretions or that increases the risk for aspiration (cognitive dysfunction, seizure disorder, spinal cord injury, or other neuromuscular disorders). In addition, physicians should be aware that the influenza vaccine is recommended for all women who are or will be pregnant during influenza season. Finally, given the risk for transmission of influenza from health care worker to patient and from health care worker to health care worker, the ACIP has placed renewed emphasis on the importance of immunizing all health care workers against influenza (6). In particular, the ACIP, Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee, ACP, Infectious Diseases Society of America, and several other professional organizations have endorsed a requirement that all health care workers with direct patient contact receive annual influenza vaccine unless a contraindication exists or the person signs an informed declination form (7).
