The development of a suitable fat emulsion for intravenous use has helped solve the problem of caloric deficiency which frequently exists in patients with inadequate oral nutrition. The use of intravenous fat has also provided an opportunity to study certain aspects of fat metabolism in various disease entities including diabetes mellitus and renal failure.
Intravenous fat tolerance tests were performed in 148 chronically ill patients infused with a 15% cottonseed oil emulsion in doses of 1 gm./Kg. over a 3½ hour period.
