Among other endocrine abnormalities that follow hypothalamic destruction in the rat, lesions in specific areas lead to a depression of thyroid function and to impaired growth.
Anterior lesions cause low thyroidal I131 uptake, I131 release rate, and plasma PBI; normal responses to increased and decreased blood levels of thyroid hormone are maintained, however. This finding is interpreted to mean that the pituitary is autonomously responsive to thyroxine concentration but that its level of reactivity is "set" by a hypothalamic mechanism acting via the pituitary stalk.
